Artist Book Series

Goal

The goal of this project was to create two conceptual book covers for a series discussing surrealist artists. I selected two artists who inspire me: Cheval and Escher.

Process

My process for this project involved researching my selected artists’ work and inspiration. I chose pieces that represent the artists’ aesthetics with the intent of creating a design that would both showcase and compliment their unique styles.

Role

Research, editorial design, written content

Cheval

Michael Cheval is a self-described absurdist whose work demonstrates a fantastical surrealist ideal. The irregular edges of the display font reflect the organic nature of Cheval’s work while being bold enough to accommodate the brilliantly colored cover art. The woman emerging from the text on the cover is reflected in the book interior.

I designed the interior layout to be highly legible while maintaining the whimsical quality of Cheval’s work.

Escher

I find M.C. Escher’s dedication to beauty through mathematics and logic incredibly inspirational. I selected Sky and Water II for its bold and easily recognizable design. The title is reflected to mirror the balance demonstrated in this piece. The title font uses a slab serif to reflect the mathematical symmetry and bold feel.
